Energise Barnet is a community-led project to increase the energy efficiency of homes and buildings, reduce fuel poverty and make renewable energy more affordable in London's largest Borough.

Energise Barnet CIC, a social enterprise, has been established to deliver the project, not a commercial organisation. Any surplus income from the project will be used to alleviate fuel poverty.

Serving as a trusted intermediary, we help local homeowners, tenants, businesses and other property owners install energy / water saving measures and renewable energy systems that help them save and make energy and money.

And, we can arrange this possibly, without property owners incurring ANY COST or at a reduced cost., via the Green Deal / Energy Company Obligation.

Information and Advice
We provide information on the costs and benefits of:
Energy efficiency measures: such as draught proofing, glazing, heating boilers and insulation Renewable energy: such as solar electricity and heating systemsWater saving measures: such as rainwater harvesting systemsElectric vehicles and smart metering

Technical advice is provided by our 'best of breed' partners including Green Deal Providers.

Property Assessments
We can visit your home or building to outline what energy saving measures/renewables may be suitable. We can also arrange a Green Deal /ECO Assessment to see if you would qualify for installation with no upfront cost - or NO cost at all.

Funding
We can arrange funding for installation. For example, via the Green Deal, Energy Company Obligation, loans and mortgages. We also advise on financial incentives available such as the Feed in Tariffs and Renewable Heat Incentive.

Installation
We arrange quotations, surveys and installation by Green Deal Providers and other partners. To reduce installation costs, we also arrange buying groups. Bigger the groups, bigger the savings.

The Big Picture
Climate change is perhaps the most pressing social justice issue facing the world and there is an urgent need to reduce carbon emissions. The amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has rapidly increased over the last 100 years, mainly due to the burning of fossil fuels which are 'non-renewable' - once they're gone, they're gone. And the faster we use them, the faster they will run out.

With a quarter of the UK’s generating capacity shutting down over the next ten years as old coal and nuclear power stations close, more than £110bn in investment is needed to build the equivalent of 20 large power stations and upgrade the grid. By 2050, electricity demand is set to double, as we shift more transport and heating on the electricity grid. Business as usual is not therefore an option.

We also need to improve energy security. By 2020, we will need to import 80% of our oil and gas and political turbulence in the Middle East and terrorism threatens security of supply.

In the UK, our homes and buildings account for around 40% of all carbon emissions and much of the energy we use is wasted, pouring out of uninsulated walls, floors, roofs and basements. This means most of us spend more on gas and electricity than we need to.

Less than 100,000 of the UK’s 26 million homes generate their own energy. Less than 50% of homes have any insulation. 10 million homes have insufficiently insulated lofts. Over 6 million homes require solid wall insulation.

Unless we therefore change the way we use and generate energy, we tace economic disruption and power blackouts.

Why Barnet?
Barnet is the largest London borough - bigger than cities like Cardiff, Edinburgh or Nottingham, population-wise.

It has around 140,000 homes and buildings, most being old and extremely wasteful of electricity and heat. Most require solid wall insulation but very few property owners have installed this - or renewable energy systems - so owners and tenants use and pay more for their energy than they need do.
 
 

 

As a result, Barnet has the highest domestic carbon emissions per capita of any London borough
(alongside Bromley and Richmond) and one of the highest in the UK.

We also have an estimated 50,000 residents in fuel poverty. This means they pay 10% or more of their income on energy bills and in the UK, more people die as a result of living in cold, damp homes than in traffic accidents. This needs to change. Urgently.
