The average UK household spends over £1,300 on energy each year. Unfortunately, much of the energy used is wasted, pouring out of homes through drafty doors and windows and uninsulated walls, floors, lofts and basements.

The Opportunity
The renewable energy, energy/water efficiency, electric vehicle and smart metering sectors are set to be big growth areas over the next few decades.

In this context, the Government has launched the biggest home improvement programme since the second world war and put in place financial incentives such as the Feed in Tariffs, the Renewable Heat Incentive and the Green Deal, to stimulate demand.

There is also increasing public awareness of environmental issues and desire to reduce energy/water consumption and related bills.

In Barnet, most of the 140,000 homes and buildings are old and extremely wasteful of electricity and heat. Most require insulation but very few property owners have installed this - or renewable energy systems - so they use and pay more for their energy than they need do. Hardly anyone has, for example, an electric vehicle, voltage optimisation or rainwater harvesting system.

Income earning opportunities are therefore substantial for those who live in the borough with an entrepreneurial, 'make it happen' attitude and a desire to improve community well-being.

Domestic Energy Assessors/Green Deal Assessors.
Roles include carrying out pre- Green Deal Assessments, providing Energy Performance Certificates and delivering other products/services such as Floor Plans, Photography and Inventory.

Sales - Energy saving measures, renewables and electric vehicles.
To introduce homeowners, businesses and other organizations that want to, for example, install solar PV/thermal systems, insulation and / or other energy and water saving measures.

Sales - Advertising / Sponsorship
To sell advertising space and sponsorship opportunities to businesses.

Apprentices/Internships
Work-based training will lead to a nationally recognised qualification in 'green' skills.  

Volunteers
Always required. Expenses paid with an opportunity to acquire skills and knowledge in the growing, community energy related sector.
